"Who, being loved, is poor?"

He was born in New Jersey, USA, in February 1950. He has worked in North California most part of his life. He is a co-creator of the Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in collaboration with J. Grinder developer of this technology and creator of Human Design Engineering ™ (DHE™).

He was first interested in Physics, programming of computer systems, and mathematics; in the end, he entered the lands of psychology and philosophy.

“The greatest personal limitation is to be found not in the things you want to do and can't, but in the things you've never considered doing.”

Bandler found the Gestalt psychology of Fritz Perls very interesting. Bandler was in charge of analyzing and cataloguing the videos of Perls in action. Bandler detected patterns in the way of acting of Perls and became a master in acting the same way, which gave him the abilities to create great things in his group Gestalt therapy.

After a debate with the Professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), he got an opportunity to form a group and teach them Gestalt therapy. He could do that, as long as a professor supervised him. The professor that agreed to supervise this 22-year-old young man was John Grinder. John was amazed of the results that Bandler obtained and proposed to help him determine exactly what he was doing (linguistic patterns) in exchange of Bandler teaching him how to do it.

For many months, Grinder devoted himself to study Bandler, while he was making friendships, learning with Satir, Bateson and many others that were low profile by that time. After a while, they started the mirror groups where Grinder would experiment with the linguistic patterns that they were obtaining.

Because of his relationship with Robert Spitzer, Bandler met Virginia Satir, authority in family therapy and the one that modeled her abilities of managing and solving very serious problems in families. This happened during a party, when Richard offered to give a ride to Virginia to a psychiatric hospital. Bandler started a friendship with Gregory Bateson-British anthropologist expert in communication and the systems theory, who lived in the house across the street and very often they would get together and drink whisky, smoke and play chess. It was Bateson who got Bandler and Milton Erickson together, from whom Bandler modeled the abilities.

Richard Bandler studied the performance of very successful people in their action field, creating equations that shape a model of specific patterns that are for everybody. These models are based in the minimum common denominator between different individuals that had the same ability, meaning the minimum number of elements or variables to obtain the same outcome. Bandler went farther than that; his efforts were focused in creating a mathematical model of human behavior.

Richard Bandler is a co-founder with John Grinder of the knowledge base NLP. Bandler was initially a student of mathematics. Richard and a good friend Frank Pucelik together spend time studying the work of Fritz Perls the founder of Gestalt Therapy. Grinder was approached by Bandler and Frank to part-take in the group discussion. Grinder left a lasting impression on Frank and was approached as a part of the team. The trio began hosting seminars and practice groups which served as a place to practice and test their newly discovered patterns.

Grinder’s specialty was in linguist, they created what is known as a therapy group. Bateson would have a profound influence on Bandler's future, introducing him and Grinder to Milton Erickson. Together Bandler, Grinder, and Erickson formed some of the foundational models for Neuro-linguistic programming.

In addition to his creative genius, Richard is known for his sense of humor, his ability to use sophisticated language patterns, and his dynamic training style.

Dr. Richard Bandler is a distinguished visitor to Menninger's Foundation, a Keynote Speaker for many Associations and Foundations. He serves as an Associate Professor at UCSC and a Graduate Advisor at Colleges. The Society of NLP-Richard Bandler has over 600 Institutes around the world. Dr. Bandler serves as a consultant to many Fortune 500 Companies., the US Military, US Intelligent Agencies, Major League Baseball teams, NFL players and Olympic Athletes. Bandler has been a Senior Editor and Publisher and has co-authored and authored many books. Bandler continues to contribute and evolve the field of NLP. He has gone on to develop other systems like Design Human Engineering, Persuasion Engineering, Neuro-Hypnotic Re-patterning to name a few.

Talking to Bandler is like talking to him on stage. "I've no secrets, nothing to hide," he says displaying the fearless being that he is. Dr. Bandler, is a mathematician, philosopher, modeler, teacher, artist and composer for four decades has left a legacy of books, videos, audios, art, students and a body of knowledge that will change therapy, education and medicine forever. He has hundreds of thousands of students and hundreds of licensed institutes all over the world. Bandler has made his mark and says he is just getting warmed up. His record of helping patients who had been deemed incurable is unsurpassed.
